At Newton Primary, our intention for the Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is the following:
- to develop the children’s knowledge of the French language in order for them to develop their confidence at communicating in French.
- to foster a curiosity and respect for the world’s cultures and deepen the children’s understanding of the world.
- to encourage children to explore and develop new ways of thinking when using new languages and make links with our own language to enhance their skills.
- to encourage a love of language learning, providing the foundations for further language learning and even study and work in other countries.
Pupil’s work is celebrated in school in different ways. It is evidenced in pupil work books, photos taken and shared on Twitter and the school website and captured in videos of the children’s spoken word and conversations.
European Languages Day and Enrichment
To support the children in European languages and culture, we celebrate with a European Languages day in September each year. Here the children have the opportunity to immerse themselves more in other languages and cultures by having the chance to taste some typical foods, explore facts about the countries and learn information about some key aspects of life from staff and parent visitors who speak and share their language and cultural experiences with the children.
Erasmus
Staff have been awarded grants to visit European countries to learn and experience first hand in situ. This experience is then built-upon back home and at school and shared with the pupils through assemblies and taster lessons.
Enrichment clubs
We have a Languages club that runs where children experience and immerse themselves in different languages. Conversational activities, vocabulary building and food tasting takes place. Children in other countries are written to and become Pen Pals.
