Life in Reception
In Reception, children have lots of fun every day! Each day is different, filled with a variety of engaging activities in both our indoor and outdoor learning environments. We provide many exciting opportunities for exploration and discovery, while carefully monitoring each child’s individual progress.
During the Reception year, children have extended opportunities to learn through play. Through a balance of carefully planned adult-led activities and spontaneous child-initiated play, children develop essential skills and understanding across seven key areas of learning.
The Prime Areas of Learning
Communication and Language (CL)
Children develop their speaking and listening skills through sharing and enjoying stories, rhymes and non-fiction books. They are encouraged to express themselves confidently and listen carefully to others.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
Children learn to build positive relationships with adults and peers. They develop co-operation skills, understand right from wrong, and begin to consider the consequences of their actions. Our staff support children to engage in all activities and develop a strong sense of belonging.
Physical Development (PD)
Children use a range of apparatus to develop their coordination, balance and spatial awareness. They enjoy team games and sports, as well as activities that refine their fine motor skills, such as construction, cutting and using malleable materials.
The Specific Areas of Learning
Literacy (L)
This area covers both reading and writing. We use the Anima Phonics programme to teach children how to link sounds and letters, helping them to become confident readers and writers.
Mathematics (M)
Children explore number, shape, pattern and measures through practical, hands-on activities. They learn to count, sort, order and problem-solve using real-life experiences and number rhymes.
Understanding the World (UW)
This area includes aspects of Science, History, Geography, Design Technology and Religious Education. Children investigate the world around them and begin to make sense of their own place within it.
Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)
Children are encouraged to be creative and imaginative. They explore colour, texture, shape and form through art, music, dance, stories and role play, expressing their thoughts and feelings in a variety of ways.
