Welcome to our Year 1 page. Here you will find some information about out curriculum and class expectations. Year 1 is the start of an important learining journey for your children as they begin the infant phase within our school. This is an exciting time for them whilst learning new skills. Each term we will cover some interesting and fun themes. Below you will find information about PE, homework and reading, as well as an overview of the Year 1 curriculum.
PE
In Year 1 our PE sessions will be on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Our Tuesday sessions will be indoor with specialist PE teachers. This half term we will be doing indoor gymnastics in our Thursday sessions. PE sessions may change after Christmas but we will keep you updated on this. Please ensure that your child comes to school in the correct kit on these days.
Reading
We expect your child to read at home every night. Please ensure that you sign their reading records. Children will be provided with their phonics reading book which will be changed every Monday. Children are also encouraged to take a book from our class and school library to read for pleasure. School class library books can be changed when the children have read them whereas the school library book can be changed weekly.
Homework
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and must be returned by the following Wednesday. It will consist of weekly spellings that are linked to a specfic phonics phase. Children will be tested on these the following Friday. In addition we will alternate a piece of Maths or English homework and an occasional piece of homework that relates to the Science or a topic that the children are covering in school.
Weekly spelling lists
These are given out at the end of the week and glued into their red spelling books. Children will be tested the following Friday. They will contain words relating to a particular spelling rule or grapheme that the children have been learning in their phonics sessions. Children are expected to learn these spellings. They are encouraged to make use of spelling frame to practise their weekly lists. The children will bring home their spelling books so that you can see how they have performed in their last test. Please ensure the spelling book is returned on a Friday for new spellings to be sent home.
