Newton Primary School

At Newton Primary School, we use the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) scheme of work to ensure that our pupils are offered a progressive curriculum, where skills are revisited, developed and extended year on year. Units are carefully scaffolded to develop technical programming skills, an understanding of computer systems and networks as well as the ability to present information or create media. Teachers' subject knowledge and confidence is supported through the teaching resources and guides which run alongside each unit plan. Lessons are amended and adapted to tailor learning to pupil needs; ensuring children are supported to keep up with learning within all units.

Our curriculum empowers our pupils to become explorers, creators, problem solvers and inventors with a tool bag of skills which they can apply across a range of devices such as laptops, iPads, Beebots, and MicroBits. Our hands-on practical approach to teaching inspires children to develop a love of and confidence with technology that is often not widely available.

As part of our Computing Curriculum, we use a range of resources in PSHE and Computing lessons to teach aspects of Online Safety throughout the year. This is supplemented with key stage half termly assemblies which use resources from Project Evolve. This is an online based scheme of work which is constantly 'evolving' to ensure the online safety messages that children and young people are being taught are delivered in a way that is more appropriate; more meaningful; that encourages reflection; that generates positive outcomes and are updating regularly to reflect the changing world. 

Online Safety content is separated into eight strands, covering everything from online relationships to copyright and ownership.
