What is Art at Newton Primary School?
Here at Newton Primary School, we have recently updated our Art curriculum and we are currently trialling the KAPOW scheme of work to ensure that progression is made across the school. The scheme allows us to explore a range of artists, skills and formal elements of art in a creative way. Art at Newton Primary School allows art, craft and design to engage, inspire and challenge pupils. We aim to equip our children with the knowledge and life-skills to create their own pieces of art, craft and design. We think it is important that children are able to express themselves and think critically to develop an interest in the subject. We promote a broad range of artists and architects to allow children greater understanding of how art is used in today’s society and the impact it has had on our history. By introducing the children to a range of different artists, we are able explore different cultures and the impact it has had on society.
Our intentions in the teaching of Art at Newton Primary School are to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. We want to give our children the opportunity to develop their ability, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond.
We aim to provide the children with opportunities to explore, develop and produce pieces of art work across six skills: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, textiles and printing. Through immersing the children in a varied curriculum, we allow them to develop their own ideas in their work and also the work of a broad range of artists/architects. We encourage the children to analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design and foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts.
Artsmark Award
Previously, we gained our Artsmark Silver award and are currently working to gain our Gold award.
At Newton Primary School, we believe that the arts and cultural provisions in our school plays an important role in the lives of our children. Whilst on our last artsmark journey, we'd realised just how important the arts are to enable the children to develop positively in their learning.
Storyhouse Partnership School
We are very fortunate to be partnered with Storyhouse Chester. Each half term, differing Year groups get to work with a member of the Storyhouse team to look at our curriculum with an art focus.
Recently, Year 6 took part in an exciting workshop based around the poetry of Benjamin Zephania. Year 5 have also attended the Storyhouse to take part in the Storyhouse Elders Festival.
Artist of the Month
Each month we will choose an ‘Artist of the Month’.
This month (April) our artist is Wassily Kandinksy.
We would like to invite you to create a piece of work based on this artist. You can use any materials for this and can be as creative as you like! We will then pick a KS1 and KS2 winner each month.
